Rachel Corrie
This spring marks the 5th anniversary of the
death of Rachel Corrie, an American University student from Washington
State.
An Israeli
bulldozer crushed her as she tried to prevent a Palestinian home
from being demolished.
Whether or not one believes that she was intentionally run over,
whether or not one believes that one side or the other in the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict is the greater victim, Rachel Corrie paid with her life
for opposing a perceived injustice.
Corrie was trained in non-violence and was serving as a human shield
when she died. She was an idealist who put her life on the line and
lost -- whether through accident or intention will remain the subject
of unresolved dispute.
One can support the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace
-- as we do -- and one can support the right of the Palestinian people
to have their own homeland and live in peace -- as we do.
Rachel Corrie's courage, to us, was a cry for justice, and only justice
will bring peace to the two warring peoples. How one views the circumstances
of her death should not be viewed as a proxy debate over the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict.
It should be viewed for what it was, a young American acting out
of a sense of injustice. Such idealism is a major force in healing
the world. In memoriam, BuzzFlash presents this week's Wings of Justice
Award to Rachel Corrie.
